Special instructions

When collecting sputum, ask the patient to brush teeth or remove dentures and rinse mouth with water. Instruct the patient not to collect saliva. Use standard aseptic preparation when collecting aspirates

Collection

If the specimen is intended for multiple testing, it should be divided so that each portion is transported at the appropriate temperature

Causes for rejection

Specimen received after prolonged delay (usually more than 72 hours)

Description of analysis

Qualitative detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) complex DNA in expectorated sputum, which is the causative agent of contagious and airborne disease of Tuberculosis

Test methodology

In vitro nucleic acid amplification assay for the detection of MTB by DiagCor GenoScreen TB Real Time PCR kit

Limitation

This procedure may be considered by medical carriers as investigational and, therefore, may not be payable as a covered benefit for patients

Storage instruction

Specimen should be kept at room temperature
