Samples in cytology preservative should be collected using a cervical broom and placed in liquid-based cytology fixative

Causes for rejection

Receipt of urine in sterile container >24 hours from collection; transport device with multiple swabs; female urethral swab; bloody or grossly mucoid specimens; bacterial swabs

Description of analysis

Detection of sexually transmitted disease caused by infection of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) using real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)

Test methodology

DNA is extracted and purified from sample and is subjected to RT-PCR amplification and detection


Above methodology detects the presence of CT DNA but cannot determine the viability status of the bacteria

Storage instruction

Specimen should be kept at room temperature
